The anti-Cindy Sheehan

I think we would all be honored to have parents such as Kelly and Gary Swanson. They represent the America I know, and the one that is worth fighting for.
Since Staff Sgt. Christopher W. Swanson was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq in July, his father has trumpeted one message: “It’s OK to hate war, but you’ve got to love the warrior.”

The words are easy to say, even when an unpopular war has divided a country. But Gary Swanson and his wife, Kelly, have carried the premise beyond expression, and in their own way, they’ve picked up living their son’s life where he left off.

Earlier this week, the couple flew from Maryland to Germany on their own dime to attend the welcome home ceremony of the 1st Armored Division’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team — their son’s former unit.

“I believe that’s what our son would want,” Gary Swanson said.

“It brings another chapter of healing for us to be here with the men who served with our son. It was important for them to be there with us, and they wanted us here.”

In Iraq, Staff Sgt. Swanson was tight with the eight soldiers he led as a dismounted patrol leader. On his personal Web page, he had written, “They are my life and my family right now. I would do anything for them even if it means giving my life to save theirs.”

His parents have adopted his devotion to those soldiers and others in his battalion, the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment.

The couple has visited wounded members of their son’s unit at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, which is not far from their home in Rose Haven, Md.

“The whole thing for us, our family being in and coming from public service, is it’s uplifting and it’s good therapy for us to be around these guys also,” said Gary Swanson, a Metro Transit police officer.
It is hard to put into words anything else more to say. In a nation united, these two parents should get the attention that Cindy Sheehan and her ilk have received - but that is not where we are - so I don't expect the media to track this story and what it has to say. The least I can do is share it with my readers.
While some parents became vocal critics of the war after losing a son or daughter in Iraq — Cindy Sheehan is famous for protesting outside President Bush’s Crawford, Texas, ranch — the Swansons have embraced the military and its mission in Iraq.

“What’s sustained us through some of this is that my son believed in his mission, and he loved leading his troops,” Gary Swanson said.

An clarification of the above story from the Swanson family;
...Chris was not killed in a road side bomb but by sniper fire while on patrol in Ramadi Iraq. Second my parents did not go to Germany on their own dime. Instead Chris' unit helped with bringing them over.
